Who is Kevin Ham?
Kevin Ham is a doctor who began building his dot com empire on off days during his residency at an Ontario hospital.
Beginning in 1998, Kevin Ham quietly amassed a portfolio of more than 300,000 domain names. The result was a $300 million empire, generating $70 million in estimated annual revenue.
After discovering the lucrative of owning domain names, Ham spent nights and weekends teaching himself technology, programming, and web design.
Kevin started the first website, HostGlobal.com, offering reviews on Web hosting companies.
During the tech crash of 2,000, Kevin Ham became aware of the massive revenue potential of pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. He began accumulating web addresses at a dirt-cheap price.
Working as a solo operator, Ham has exploited every angle to expand his domain enterprise.
His cleverest move was striking a deal with the Cameroon government to “typo-squat” all non-registered .cm domains.
Web browsers who mistakenly type, say, google.cm or gawker.cm are automatically rerouted to an advertising website operated by Ham. Both Ham and the government of Cameroon benefit from this typo-squatting.
Kevin Ham was one of the first to take advantage of this domain registration loophole.
By 2007 Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo began to crack down on domain and typo-squatting. However, Ham’s foresight of sweeping up domain names during the dot com bust has made him the landlord of some of the most valuable real estate on the Web.
Kevin sold 100,000 domains to GoDaddy for an estimated amount of $50 million in 2017. A figure that he neither acknowledges nor denies.
Ham continues to practice medicine on missionary trips and as founder and CEO of Reinvent Technology.

Kevin Ham Childhood Life
Dr. Kevin Ham was born into a poor immigrant Korean family. He grew up on the west side of Vancouver, where his dad owned a dry cleaning business.
Kevin Ham dreamed of becoming a doctor at the age of 14 after contracting a debilitating illness.
Growing in a devoted Christianity family, Kevin made the Bible a focal point of his life. He became a member of the Evangelical Layman’s Church and attended regular Bible meetings.
Ham recalls sometime in 1992 or 1993, a friend from the church introduced him to the Web. He shared with Kevin about a powerful new medium that they can use to spread the gospel.
Pursuing the childhood dream, Kevin Ham attended medical school at the University of British Columbia.
After graduating from medical school in 1998, Ham and his new bride took off for London, Ontario, for a two-year residency.
While working his residency at an Ontario hospital, Kevin began building his dot com empire on off days.
Ham taught himself how to code and build websites.
He launched an online directory of web hosting providers to offer reviews and ratings of their services. He named the site Hostglobal.com.
Within six months of launching Hostglobal, Kevin Ham earned around $10,000 per month in ad sales.
Kevin then created DNSindex.com to help people find and buy domain names. He became aware of the massive revenue potential of pay-per-click advertising.
Ham decided to put off his medical career to become a domainer.
Kevin Ham Family
Kevin Ham Parents
Kevin’s dad, Dalsik Ham, was in his 20’s when he left Korea to take a job as a miner in Germany. Life as a miner was no less grueling than the country he had just left.
So in 1969, he moved to London, Ontario, Canada, where he met Kevin’s mother, Kyung Sin.
Kyung Sin left Korea to attend nursery school in Canada.
After the birth of Kevin Ham, the family moved west to Vancouver, where his dad started up a dry cleaning business.
However, their struggles were not over. Kevin Ham hardly saw his father as he grew up.
Kevin’s father went to work before he awoke and didn’t get home until he was asleep.
Kyung Sin, Kevin’s mother, worked graveyard shifts as a nurse. She slept a few hours, then helped his dad in the dry cleaning business.
Ham said: ‘I am forever indebted to my parents for bringing us up with the proper values and being such a strong foundation for our family.’
