He never attended college.

Daymond John’s career

Things came crashing down when Daymond John was ten years old.

His parents divorced, his father left the house, and his mother could not secure a job to support the family.

Thus, the family sank into poverty.

Daymond John decided to be the man of the house. He started working to help his mother.

As a provider for the family, John began handing out flyers to earn $2 per hour ($7.42 today).

After leaving high school, Daymond John started a commuter van service and waited tables at Red Lobster to raise money for his business venture.

Daymond John saw an opportunity to make some waves in the clothing industry in the early 90s.

In fashion at the time were wool ski hats with their tops tied off. These hats typically sold for $20, which John considered overpriced.

Recognizing the opportunity, John went home and sewed about ninety wool ski-style hats with the help of his next-door neighbor.

Daymond John sold his homemade hats for $10 each on the corner of Jamaica Avenue in Queens, New York, and made $800 in a single day in 1992.

This early success gave John a lot of confidence, and he began working harder.

Daymond John recruited his childhood friends, Alexander Martin, Carl Brown, and Keith Perrin, to work with him in sewing and selling hats.

Realizing her son’s talent, John’s mother decided to mortgage her house and invest $100,000 in the hat business.

Daymond John set up the FUBU business, which stands for For Us By Us, in his house.

Marketing the FUBU brand was the biggest challenge during its early stages.

John began sewing the FUBU logo onto hockey jerseys, sweatshirts, and T-shirts.

He then loaned about 10 of the FUBU jerseys out to rappers for their music videos for two years.

The promotional strategy got the FUBU brand to feature in about 30 music videos.

Although FUBU was a small-time apparel brand at the time, its presence in popular music videos created the illusion that it was a big brand.

Many retailers began to order the FUBU brand in bulk to sell at their stores.

Daymond John had a big breakthrough by convincing his childhood friend, rapper LL Cool J, to wear a FUBU T-shirt for a promotional campaign.

FUBU quickly became one of the leading urban clothing lines, setting fashion trends for young African Americans.

The company hit big when Macy placed an order for $300,000 worth of products at a Las Vegas fashion trade show.

FUBU’s popularity soon extended beyond the inner city. It became a global brand and has managed to earn more than $6 billion in sales.

Daymond John sold FUBU to the athletic shoe brand Puma in 2018 for $200 million.

Then in 2009, Daymond John joined the cast of ABC’s new reality business show, Shark Tank.

Shark Tank allows entrepreneurs to pitch their business ideas to investors in the hopes of receiving funding.

Daymond John became one of the most admired investors on the show.

He invested over $8.5 million of his own money into different Shark Tank businesses.

Some of his most successful deals include Bubba’s Q, Sun-Staches, and Mo’s Bows.
