Jeff Bezos was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on January 12, 1964.

At the time of his birth, his mother, Jacklyn Gise, was a 17-year-old high school student and his father, Ted Jorgensen, was 19. The Jorgensens were married less than a year.

Jacklyn often attended night school while bringing baby Jeff along.

His mother remarried Mike Bezos, a Cuban immigrant, in April 1968.

Within a year after the marriage, Mike adopted four-year-old Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen. Jeff changed his surname to Bezos.

The family then moved to Houston, Texas, where Mike worked as an engineer for Exxon.

Jeff Bezos attended River Oaks Elementary School, Houston, from fourth to sixth grade.

The then family moved to Miami, Florida, where Bezos attended Miami Palmetto High School.


While in high school, Bezos started his first business, the Dream Institute, an educational summer camp for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders.
